What your health journey looks like

1
Initial Consultation

Longer than you're probably used to. We'll ask about the thing you came in for, then any related conditions — because in Chinese medicine those aren't separate topics, they're how we work out what's driving what.

Bring any recent blood tests, scans or specialist letters. Even the ones you were told were normal — especially those.

Then we stop and explain. What we think is going on in your body and why. Which of our treatments we think will help and which won't. And a treatment plan you leave with.

2
Treatment

Acupuncture is usually once a week. Sometimes twice a week early on, if things are acute or have been there a very long time. Sometimes once every two or three weeks as things settle. It depends on what you've got and how you respond.

If we've prescribed Chinese herbs, they come as granules you dissolve in hot water and drink daily. Daily matters more than you'd think — herbs work on accumulation. They also taste like what they are. Most people get used to it in about a fortnight.

Along the way we'll book review consultations to check where things are up to and adjust the plan. Formulas change as you change. So does the needling. The plan you left with on day one is a starting position.

3
Review

When the course finishes, we sit down and look at what actually happened. There are three honest answers, and you'll get whichever one is true.

Things have improved. We start spacing treatments further apart, then stop, and see whether your body holds it on its own without us. That is the aim of the entire process. A patient who doesn't need to come back is the outcome we're working towards, not the one we're trying to avoid.

Things have improved but the picture is complex or long-standing. We may recommend a further course. If we do, we'll tell you exactly what we expect it to change and by when — so you can judge it for yourself rather than take our word for it.

Nothing has changed. Then we say so, plainly and promptly, and we'll suggest where else to look. We'd rather lose the booking than keep taking your money.

Meet your practitioner

Most people have to choose between a practitioner who has the experience and one who can explain it. He's both.

Kejia Chen will use anatomy, hormones and physiology — the terms you could understand — to walk you through what he's seeing and why he's treating it the way he is. Most patients say it's the first time anyone has actually explained their own body to them.
